Community Mapping Findings and the Value of Your Library Card

‍ Throughout the latter half of 2025, Santa Monica Public Library staff members gathered community input through online and print surveys in English and Spanish, targeted focus groups, community conversations at the Main Library, Pico Branch, and Montana Branch, and pop-up outreach events, including the State of the City celebration at the Christine Emerson Reed Park. We recently released a report sharing the key findings from our Community Mapping engagement efforts, which is now available to read online.‍ ‍

These insights will help us map the future of our library, including shaping programs and services, planning future partnerships, and making strategic decisions that reflect the needs of the Santa Monica community.

What We Heard from You‍ ‍

Residents consistently described the Library as a valued public institution that supports learning, connection, and belonging. However, we can better support the people we serve by taking the following actions:

‍-          Expand and Rebalance Access and Hours: Access, particularly evening and weekend hours, was one of the most frequently raised issues.

-          Strengthen Cleanliness and Safety Through Environmental and Operational Improvements: Safety concerns are closely tied to cleanliness, lighting, and visibility, especially at the Main Library.

-          Reinvest in Youth, Teen, and Family Services: Residents expressed concern about reduced youth programming and a desire for spaces and services designed for tweens and teens.

-          Advance Equity Through Cultural Representation and Language Access: Hispanic/Latino families and other community members emphasized the importance of bilingual service, Spanish-language programming, and culturally relevant collections.

-          Expand Technology and Digital Literacy Services: Residents of all ages view the Library as a trusted source for technology support.

-          Improve Communication and User Experience: Many residents value library services but struggle to find timely, clear information.

Reopening Branches: More Than Just Hours‍ ‍

One of the clearest messages we heard was how much our neighborhood branch libraries matter, especially when they’re fully staffed and open to the public. We're excited to share that, as of January 2026, the Fairview and Ocean Park Branch libraries are now open for full-service operations three days a week. These locations may not be as large as the Main Library. Still, they play just as large a role in the lives of Santa Monicans, offering neighborhood access to resources, welcoming spaces for study and collaboration, and a sense of belonging that starts with simply being able to walk through the doors.

Expanding branch access and hours continues through the City’s Realignment Plan. In July, both the Fairview and Ocean Park Branch libraries, as well as the Montana Branch, will open for full-service operations four days a week.

Beyond Books: What the Library Offers‍ ‍

The Library’s value reaches far beyond books. Of course, you’ll find a wide selection for readers of all ages, but your library card unlocks so much more. Did you know you can stream music and movies or even check out Nintendo Switch video games? Plus, you can save your hard-earned cash by borrowing themed kits, attending free classes and workshops, and enjoying discounts at participating local businesses.

‍ -          Literacy Services: In my opinion, our literacy program is the most important resource we provide to the community. In addition to our popular Tech & Tasks drop-in program, which offers volunteer assistance on a first-arrival basis, we offer free English as a Second Language classes and citizenship classes through our partnership with the Adult Education Center. You can also earn a fully accredited high school diploma through the Career Online High School program.

-          Digital Resources: In addition to digital services like eBooks and audiobooks, you can access an impressive range of online research and educational resources, available 24/7 with your library card. Get live online homework help from an expert tutor with Brainfuse. Enjoy digital versions of over 7,000 newspapers and magazines in more than 60 languages with PressReader. Master a foreign language with Mango Languages. Or learn about local history through Imagine Santa Monica, our digital collection of photographs, maps, and more.

-          Community Discount Program: Did you know your library card can save you money even outside our building walls? Through our Community Discount Program, SMPL cardholders receive exclusive discounts at 30 local businesses, including your favorite coffee shops, fitness studios, restaurants, and more.

-          Library Kits: The Library has a variety of kits designed to encourage reading and interactive learning. From early literacy tools for young children to themed collections for older adults, library kits offer hands‑on educational experiences. They also provide practical information and tools to help with everyday tasks, including our DIY Sustainability Toolkit or our new Read, Engage, Discover (RED) Bike Repair Kits.
